Artists Unite! is a platform of writers, artists, and cultural practitioners from across India, who have come together through a common concern for democracy and against hate.
The country today is passing though a critical phase; institutions, histories and culture are being distorted, hate manufactured, and then cynically deployed for political mobilisation, and ideological domination.
Artists Unite! views culture as the glue that binds diverse peoples together, a space where we discover shared aspects of humanity, a history of belonging and a spiritual exploration of ourselves. We resist the attempt to create a culture of animosity and domination, which seeks enemies and thrives on conflict.
At this critical moment, we re-dedicate ourselves to defend a culture that speaks of equality and solidarity. We will fight hate with love. We will counter violence with peace. Through images, speech, words, music, and our bodies, we will resist the cultural destruction of India.
More than 700 writers, artists, and cultural practitioners have already signed the Artists Unite Declaration (see the list of signatories here).
We invite others to sign up.
On March 2 & 3, 2019 a host of events nationwide will bring together a wave of creative expression in defence of democracy and against hate. Thousands will gather across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Dharwad and more to celebrate the shared culture of the people that belongs to all.
